Will New US DoD List Affect Unreal?

VICE ⊳ Tencent, the Chinese gaming giant, has been added to a US Department of Defense list of companies allegedly aiding the Chinese military. The designation, announced on 6 January 2025, includes other Chinese firms like CATL and Autel Robotics. Whilst this will not necessarily lead to immediate bans, Tencent owns 35% of Epic Games and it remains to be seen whether this DoD decision will impact on the widespread use of Epic’s Unreal games engine outside of gaming in engineering, training and other industry sectors.
