AI Challenges Physics in Weather Simulation
⊲ Ars Technica ⊳ Google’s DeepMind “Weather Lab” AI model delivered the most accurate short-range forecasts for Hurricane Erin, this year’s strongest Atlantic storm. Over 72 hours it outperformed both traditional physics-based and consensus models on track and intensity, even beating the National Hurricane Center’s official guidance. Its advantage was most marked in two-day intensity forecasts. While AI still lags in the critical three- to five-day window, this trial suggests AI models may soon rival or surpass conventional forecasting.
