From Wargames to Real Wars
⊲ Scientific Reports ⊳ A paper from China’s PLA Academy of Military Science, may mark a moment when a new tool outpaces military AI doctrine. Using hexagonal grid encoding and a ReAct-based reasoning loop, Geo-Commander, an LLM-based tactical agent, screens terrain, interprets map features and supports location choices in tank detachment scenarios. The system is framed as a human-supervised decision-support tool, but its modular, updatable architecture points beyond the tank simulation used to validate it, perhaps for exploitation in actual warfighting scenarios. The authors speculate that LLMs understand hexagonal terrain grids so readily because their training corpora already contain substantial hex-grid content from wargaming, combat simulation and commercial games. This tool may hence owe as much to a games industry as to any deliberate military AI programme.
