Driving Cars Before They Are Made

YouTube ⊳ BMW’s advanced driving simulation facility in Munich allows for the testing of car dynamics up to four years before a vehicle is built. Here, a journalist experienced the BMW iX3’s lateral dynamics firsthand, reaching simulated speeds of 150 kph with lane-change manoeuvres. Engineers use the facility to compare tyre and suspension setups, balancing driving performance with ride comfort. The simulator runs on 2.8 megawatts of clean energy, moves 23 tonnes of mass up to 1.0G across a 21-metre rail, and can calculate 605 elements simultaneously in real time.
