Museums + Heritage ⊳ The University of Glasgow has launched a virtual museum dedicated to pioneering scientist Lord Kelvin as part of a £5.6m “Museums in the Metaverse” initiative. This virtual 19th-century lab recreates Kelvin’s workspace, showcasing digitised artefacts and scientific instruments that are not typically displayed in the museum itself. Funded by the UK Government’s Innovation Accelerator, the project enables global access to cultural collections, and aims to allow users to build virtual museum collections from spring 2025. The exhibition concludes the University’s bicentennial celebrations of Kelvin’s birth (26 June 1824). Lord Kelvin was instrumental in the formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, became the first scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords, and absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour.
