Walking Challenges in Virtual Worlds
⊲ Lifehacker ⊳ Virtual reality developers are experimenting with three main methods to give users natural movement in tight spaces. Redirected walking shifts visual cues to keep users within bounds. Walking-in-place systems detect foot motion to control movement. Omnidirectional treadmills like Virtuix Omni, Kat Walk and Wizdish ROVR enable full-body locomotion. These options vary in immersion, cost, footprint and ease of use, but none perfectly replicate unrestricted real walking. The author suggests that AR might be a better fit for immersive experiences, allowing users to move freely in real spaces without expensive equipment.
