USAF’s Advanced Training Goggle Development
Finland’s Varjo has won a contract in the USAF’s AFWERX Super Goggle Challenge, aimed at creating high-performance mixed-reality goggles to enhance flight training. This project supports the Department of Defense’s digital design goals, with the intention of replicating realistic “outside the cockpit” visuals. Over two to four years, Varjo will prototype solutions guided by the Air Force Research Laboratory, contributing to innovative pilot training tools for the USAF and allies.

Editor’s Comment – It will be interesting to observe what advances in capability this project will achieve compared to the the more mainstream efforts of Meta and the like. One might be usability, as the USAF is calling for its goggle to be “usable for 1.5 – 3 hours at a time”.
Launched March 2024, the AFWERX Super Goggle Challenge aims to digitally design advanced pilot goggles for realistic and flexible training across U.S. Air Force platforms. This initiative targets a 2-4 year prototype timeline. Focus areas include:
Architecture: Open XR standards and modular compatibility for varied devices.
User Experience: High-resolution visuals with a wide field of view, ease of use, night vision compatibility, and 1.5–3 hour comfort.
Hardware & Security: High refresh rate, tracking precision, SCIF compliance, and secure, maintainable components for intensive training.
