Robotic Surgery Over 2,400km

The Guardian ⊳ Professor Prokar Dasgupta at The London Clinic in Harley Street has performed the UK’s first remote robotic surgery, operating on a prostate cancer patient 2,400km away in Gibraltar. Using the Toumai Robotic System, a four-armed robot with a 3D HD camera, he controlled the procedure with just 60 milliseconds of latency via fibre optic cables. The operation formed part of a trial exploring whether specialist surgeons can treat patients remotely when travel or staffing limits local access to expertise.
