Big Tech Backs 60 Years of XR Heritage

⊲ Meta ⊳ Meta has joined Google and Applied Materials as a founding sponsor of Extended Reality: Visions of the Future at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, running until 28 March 2027. The 800 sq ft exhibition traces nearly 60 years of XR, from Sutherland’s 1968 head-mounted display to Oculus Rift, Google Glass, HoloLens and current AI glasses. On selected demo days, visitors can try a museum mode on Meta Glasses, where placards trigger curator narration and Meta AI answers follow-up questions, designed with blind and low-vision users in mind.
◂ Placing the 1968 Sutherland display beside Project Aria glasses frames XR as a decades-long engineering lineage rather than a passing consumer fad. ▸
