Digital World Preserves WW1 Battlefield

⊲ Popular Science ⊳ Virginia Tech’s ARIES team is turning archaeological records from Belgium’s Dig Hill 80 into an immersive virtual experience. The First World War trench site was excavated before housing development covered the location, producing thousands of photographs, 3D scans and more than three terabytes of data. Visitors will explore trenches, graves and digitally recreated artefacts through a web-based platform, preserving the site’s spatial history and personal stories long after the physical remains disappeared beneath modern homes. Full public release is expected early next year.
