Open Source UAV Flight Test Bench Emerges
⊲ Hackaday ⊳ Developer AlexanderRex has built PteroSim, an open-source test bench for simulating uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) from pre-flight validation to a full autonomy testing pipeline. The platform runs PX4, ArduPilot and Betaflight autopilot binaries directly, feeding them simulated sensor data and receiving actuator commands as though controlling real hardware. Flight dynamics are calculated using JSBSim, with the resulting scene rendered in Unreal Engine 5. The tool allows developers to test autopilot settings and iterate on UAV configurations without the cost, risk or logistics of physical flight testing.
⊲ Pairing JSBSim’s flight dynamics with Unreal Engine 5 rendering points to a growing appetite for UAV testing and how ubiquitous it is becoming. ⊳
