XR Powers “The Human as a Weapons System”

MIT Technology Review ⊳ Anduril and Meta are prototyping augmented-reality smart glasses for the US Army under a $159 million contract, aiming to optimise “the human as a weapons system.” Two systems are in development: the Army’s Soldier Born Mission Command (SBMC), attaching glasses to existing helmets, and a self-funded helmet called EagleEye. Both overlay maps, drone positions, and AI-identified targets onto a soldier’s view, with Gemini, Llama, and Claude translating voice commands into actions. Production is not expected before 2028; rivals Rivet and Elbit also hold contracts after Microsoft’s $22 billion deal ended.
