Gaussian Splatting Reaches Consumer Cameras

⊲ TechRadar ⊳ Chinese camera and imaging technology company Insta360 has launched Spatial Capture, a free beta feature that converts 360-degree video into navigable 3D environments using Gaussian Splatting. Available for compatible cameras including the X4 Air, X5 and X6, it reconstructs scenes from millions of positioned and coloured elements. Processing takes place in the cloud, with four free renders available each month. Scenes can be explored through the Insta360 app or shared through a browser, opening accessible 3D scanning to existing camera owners. Insta360 recommends areas of up to 100 square metres, suiting rooms rather than landscapes.
◂ Free 3D Gaussian Splatting on the X6 and X5 lowers the cost of capturing real rooms for training environments to almost nothing. ▸
