LiDAR Could Challenge Aircraft Stealth
⊲ Interesting Engineering ⊳ Chinese researchers have simulated a LiDAR system they claim could detect a US F-35C stealth aircraft at distances approaching 62km. The proposed sensor uses high-power ultraviolet lasers and single-photon LiDAR detection to identify faint reflections from targets including aircraft resembling the F-35. Computer simulations suggest the approach could distinguish targets against atmospheric noise, but practical deployment faces challenges involving weather, power requirements and accurate beam control. The narrow laser beam limits search coverage compared with radar, and the results remain predictions. The study appears in the peer-reviewed Chinese journal Aero Weaponry.
◂ Western threat libraries for pilot training and mission rehearsal may need to represent 1,064-nanometre laser seekers alongside familiar radar and infrared threats. ▸
