Wireless Earbuds Gain Visual Awareness
⊲ Gizmodo ⊳ Researchers at the University of Washington have built VueBuds, the first system to fit tiny cameras inside off-the-shelf wireless earbuds, allowing users to ask an AI about whatever they are looking at. Rice-grain-sized cameras capture low-resolution black-and-white images, transmitted over Bluetooth for on-device processing in roughly one second. Across 74 participants, VueBuds matched Ray-Ban Meta Glasses performance on most tasks. The team aims to add colour capability and develop specialised models for translation and low-vision assistance.
