Virtual Worlds Gain Missing Sense

Virtual Worlds Gain Missing Sense

⊲ Discover Magazine ⊳ Researchers at Ohio State University and Zhejiang Laboratory have developed Scentronic, an AI-assisted system that detects odours and recreates them remotely. An electronic nose of metal oxide sensors identifies volatile compounds, with machine learning classifying patterns before scent data travels via Wi-Fi and a cloud server to wearable dispensers built as a necklace, wristband or handheld unit. Each uses a five-channel piezoelectric atomiser. In tests published in Science Advances, 14 volunteers identified transmitted smells 73 per cent of the time. Proposed uses include virtual worlds, online shopping and medical diagnosis.
◂ A five-channel piezoelectric atomiser limits Scentronic to a small scent library, yet even that could add a missing cue to many immersive training environments. ▸
