Simulation Prepares Germany’s Helicopter Upgrade
⊲ US Army ⊳ The US Army reports that the Illesheim Flight Simulator Complex at Storck Barracks in Bavaria has hosted the first German Air Force pilots ahead of the Bundeswehr fielding 60 CH-47F Block II Chinooks from autumn 2027. Two experienced Luftwaffe pilots, previously trained at Fort Rucker, used the facility to rehearse emergency procedures, difficult landings and severe weather operations. Germany plans to train more than 200 Chinook pilots, and the complex, the only one of its kind in Germany, spares crews transatlantic trips while supporting at least five NATO partners.
◂ Germany’s plan for more than 200 Chinook pilots suggests simulator capacity, rather than airframes, may become the real pacing factor for the 2027 fielding. ▸
