Smart Glasses Banned from Court Buildings
⊲ syracuse.com ⊳ New York’s Court System will ban smart glasses and other recording eyewear from all court buildings starting 20 July. Video and photography have long been barred from courthouses, but officials say smart glasses created a loophole, allowing footage to be captured discreetly. The rule covers more than 1,240 state, county, city, town and village courts and applies to staff, attorneys and visitors alike, with prescription smart glasses included. Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have introduced similar bans, though New York’s ban is the broadest, covering every court area rather than courtrooms alone.
New York’s approach to smart glasses is likely to be looked at closely by many other organisations before deciding whether covert recording risks justify similar restrictions.
